Description: Geologic hazard is a geologic condition which may pose a significant threat to persons or property. Development in designated Geologic Hazard Areas should be discouraged. Development should only be allowed in these designated hazard areas when adequate mitigation or elimination of potential hazards can be deomonstrated.The Environmental Geology Element (January 1979) was prepared by Tom Gray, a licensed professional geologist, who was on staff from 1974 to 1984. He was hired after the passages of HB 1041 (areas of state interest- geologic hazards) and HB 1529 (commercial sand, gravel, and quarry aggregate bill that requied the 10 most populous counties to develop master plans for extraction that would preclude development over such deposits). He wrote the Geology Element, policies, and did the research for preparing the geologic hazards and mineral resources maps using professional literature, aerial reconnaissance and photos, field visits, and networking with other geologists like Colorado GS and USGS work, peer consultation and networking with both public and private sector geologists/engineers, etc. The comprehensive bibliography: "For a comprehensive bibliography of the geology of Boulder County, interested parties are referred to: American Geological Institute, 1976, Bibliography and Index of Colorado Geography, Colorado Geological Survey Bulletin 37, pp. 405-409."
